Un grand arbre. Il atteint 15-23 m de haut. Certains types ont des piquants et d'autres pas. Les feuilles sont alternes et ont 3 folioles. Les folioles sont lisses. Les 2 folioles latérales sont rondes et mesurent 10 à 20 cm de long. Le dépliant final est plus grand. Les groupes de fleurs mesurent 22 cm de long. Les fleurs sont rouges.
