Un arbuste. Il peut être dressé ou décousu. Il continue de croître d'année en année. Il atteint 1 à 5 m de hauteur. Les branches peuvent avoir des piquants. Les feuilles mesurent 2 à 12 cm de long sur 2 à 6 cm de large. Ils sont opposés ou en anneaux. Les fruits sont noirs à maturité{{{0(+x) (traduction automatique).
